South Africa Ministry Partnerships

In South Africa food insecurity is ever present. Currently North Point funds two meal programs. At the Munsieville Uniting Reformed Church, about 300 children receive a meal after school twice a week.  The kids come in groups and eat “family style” around a specially designed table in the church kitchen. Praying the Lord’s Prayer starts every meal.
In the very rural northern province of Limpopo lies Kgautswane, a cluster of small villages where life is extremely hard. From a small community center daily meals are served to 60 orphans and vulnerable children, many of whom are heads of the household.
Our Men’s Group has partnered with Tembisa Uniting Reformed Church near Johannesburg by providing funding for the purchase of water catchment tanks and irrigation materials for their garden project.
North Point’s most recent opportunity is one that will truly excel in changing lives – a health clinic project in Sebokeng, a large area made up of several townships and informal settlements.  Access to healthcare is almost impossible for most people. Clinics are miles away, people can’t afford transport and walking long distances can be stressful and even dangerous, especially for women.  Clinics are poorly staffed and frequently run out of much-needed medication.

What makes this so exciting is that it is a 6-way partnership to make healthcare accessible by bringing it to where the people are.  Partners include:  North Point, Side by Side:South Africa, Poulsbo Rotary, the Seattle Presbytery, the Gauteng Department of Health, and the implementing South Africa partner, Ubuntu Evolution Hub.

While the permanent clinic is under construction, the mobile clinic brings healthcare to the surrounding communities, such as flu vaccines where in one month over 609 vaccines were administered – even at church on Sunday.  This is a figure never before achieved by the Dept. of Health. Stay tuned for further updates on this clinic project.
Beginning in 2011, by partnering with Side by Side:South Africa, North Point has had the opportunity to become involved in service in South Africa.  With Side by Side’s leadership, groups and individuals from North Point have traveled to South Africa, and some of our partners there have been able to visit us here, making this a unique, relationship-based ministry.
The members of the South Africa Ministry Partnership Team invite you to join us to discuss and pray about how we might build our relationship with our brothers and sisters in South Africa. Coming does not commit you to joining the team, but your input and perspective would be truly appreciated. Please contact Penny Stokke at pennystokke@gmail.com with any questions.

You can donate to South Africa Ministry Partnerships on-line by clicking here, by dropping off a check in the tithe box in the foyer, during Sunday service offering, or mailing a check to our office.  When making a gift, please make sure to indicate “South Africa” in the memo line.
